about the author

John Lang was born in the Arizona State adoption system, then adopted and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. He attended preparatory school at New Mexico Military Institute, where he wrote his first poem, after which he attended undergraduate school at Northern Arizona University. John attended graduate school in the MFA Writing program at Columbia University.

For many years, John was a journeyman pop songwriter in Hollywood, California, working in and out of recording studios and music publishing houses, writing songs for everyone from Mr. Mister to Tupac Shakur to Celine Dion, all the time scribbling outside the music box, in between the lines, as much fiction as he could muster.

Now John lives in Southern California with his wife and son.

“Bent Spoon” follows Bub Stanfield, a young boy whose wish to solve the puzzle of his chaotic home life and the characters in it takes him to various places around the state of Arizona, both real and imagined, by himself, as well as in the company of his mother, his father, and his grandparents. Bub remembers and recounts his adventures through daydreams, memory, and invention, his imagination roaming far and wide, taking the reader on a hallucinatory rollercoaster ride through his vibrant inner life as he searches for the answer to, among other things, why his parents stay together in spite of his mother’s mental illness and his father’s extramarital affairs.
